Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.

J.R.R.Tolkien: The Fellowship of the Ring

Our theme for October is hard, but not hard to write about, I hope. The theme is Stones.

You can find rocks and stones almost anywhere you go in Middle-earth. From a little pebble to giant boulders, they come in many shapes and sizes. They create mountains and valleys, lie in streams or under the soil, offer building material for many kinds of buildings and mark important places.

Gondor means literally "land of stone", and there are also many individual stones worth a mention: the Stone of Erech, the standing stones in Barrow-downs, Durin's Stone at Mirrormere... Statues like those of Argonath or the king at the crossroads in Ithilien are made of stone as well. Even the jewels can be considered as stones, and there are many famous ones: the Silmarils, the Arkenstone, the Star of Elendil... Aragorn himself was called Elfstone because of the green jewel Elessar he bore on his breast, and so you can even write about this name instead of an actual stone in your story.

Stone is the most lasting of materials and when something is set in stone, it is firmly given. You can explore this metaphorical meaning of the theme, but also write about the creartures that are deeply connected with stone - the Dwarves were created from it, and live in a close connection with it, and the trolls even turn to stone when exposed to the rays of sun. Then there are the Stone-giants whose idea of a game is hurling stones at each other - it seems that stones do not have to be as lifeless as it looks at first sight!

And the winners are:

A Bit of Stone by Karri 3rd place
A Harmless Hobby by Horsegirl
A Present from Bilbo by Runewife
Elegy by Annafan 2nd place
Fire on the Mountain by sian22 1st place
In Glittering Caves by Cassie Hughes
Mists of Time by Linda Hoyland
Smoke Rings and Pipe Dreams by PSW
Stubborn As Stone by My Blue Rose
The Lhun stones by Chiara Cadrich

Happy reading and congratulations to the winners!
