One Title: Your Story

A Fairy Tale, Middle-Earth style

Games People Play

Friends in Small Places

The testing period of our new rules is over, and based on the survey, here is the final form of the rules for this contest: rules
And here are the results of the survey:

THE NEW RULES IN GENERAL
- influenced your participation in the contest (writing, reading the stories, voting) in a following way:
encouraged: 7
no change: 8
discouraged: 2

THE QUALITY OF THE STORIES
increased: 3
no change: 13
decreased: 1

NEW RULE: The new schedule - each challenge running for two months, with a new challenge every month and deadline at the end of the following month

- influenced your participation in the contest (writing, reading the stories, voting) in a following way:
encouraged: 10
no change: 5
discouraged: 1

Should we keep this rule?
yes: 12
no: 2
no opinion: 3

CONCLUSION: We are going to keep this rule. We are aware that the schedule with two overlapping challenges might be more confusing to some people, but it is very helpful to others, who don't have that much time to write and can focus on one story for two months. If it's harder to follow for you, you can see the two current challenges with their deadlines in the "recent challenges" tab, or follow our facebook, where you will get a reminder before the deadline of every challenge. It is only up to you if you will stick to the old schedule of Teitho and focus only on the challenge ending in the current month, or pick the one you like better and take the full two months to write your story.

NEW RULE: Allowing slash under the same rules as het

- influenced your participation in the contest (writing, reading the stories, voting) in a following way:
encouraged: 4
no change: 10
discouraged: 3

Should we keep this rule?
yes: 8
no: 4
no opinion: 5

CONCLUSION: We are going to keep this rule. This is a topic that will always have passionate opinions both for and against, so we apologize to all who might be dissapoointed by the result. We would like to remind you that all stories now have a header information, and it is perfectly alright to vote without having read all stories, if the content disturbs you in any way.

NEW RULE: Allowing stories or pictures that contain any character mentioned by Tolkien in any of his works set in Middle-earth.

- influenced your participation in the contest (writing, reading the stories, voting) in a following way:
encouraged: 11
no change: 3
discouraged: 3

Should we keep this rule?
yes: 13
no: 4
no opinion: 0

CONCLUSION: We are going to keep this rule. We understand that Aragorn and Legolas were the characters making Teitho special for a long time (and you can still write about them, of course!), but the number of submitted stories speaks for itself. We would rather be a more general, but active contest, than a special one that fades away without submissions.

NEW RULE: The deadline for voting depending on the number of stories (two weeks for up to 5 stories, and an additional week for each 5 more stories)

- influenced your participation in the voting in a following way:
encouraged: 4
no change: 8
discouraged: 3

Should we keep this rule?
yes: 7
no: 4
no opinion: 6

CONCLUSION: This rule will be changed back to the original fixed period of two weeks for voting. There might be a one week extension possible in the case that the number of stories is too high.

NEW RULE: authors can't vote for their own stories, but get bonus points for voting, if their vote would push their own story to a lower place

- influenced your participation in the contest (writing, and voting) in a following way:
encouraged: 3
no change: 13
discouraged: 0

Should we keep this rule?
yes: 8
no: 2
no opinion: 6

CONCLUSION: We are going to keep this rule. Many people are confused about what it actually does, though, so let me clarify: Authors not being allowed to vote for their stories is a rule in Teitho since the beginning. I have been couting the votes for a long time and often I saw that the vote of the author pushed their own story to a lower place, since they were effectively voting against themselves. Allowing authors to vote for their own stories would not fix this problem: some authors would use this option, but some would be too shy or too critical to themselves to vote for their own story. They would either vote for another, or not vote at all, to not penalize their own story. We would like the authors to be able to vote freely, without having to worry about this.

And here is an example about how it works: The stories get 3 points for 1st place vote, 2 points for 2nd place, 1 point for 3rd place, and a maximum of 3 bonus points. Let's say that there are 3 competing stories (A, B, and C) and got the following score:
A - 14 points
B - 12 points
C - 9 points
Author of story A did not vote.
Author of story B voted for A as 1st place (3 points) and did not vote for 2nd place (just for the sake of this example).
Author of story C voted for B as 1st place (3 points) and A as 2nd (2 points).

Since the difference between A and B is only created by the fact that the author of B voted for A, B will get bonus points to even that difference. The bonus points can not shift the order of stories, so A keeps the 1st place, but B gets the difference of 2 bonus points to compensate to their vote, and shares the place with A.
The difference between A and C is bigger than 3 points, so C's vote for A is not taken into account. But the points they gave to B are evened by 3 bonus points, resulting in a total of 12 points for C. But since B overook it by 2 bonus points it got for the author's vote, C keeps the 2nd place. The final result is:
A - 14
B - 12 + 2 = 14
C - 9 + 3 = 12

What would happen if A voted as well? If authors vote for each other reciprocally, their votes negate themselves. If A would vote for B as 1st place (3 points), there would be no bonus points given to B for their vote, because 3-3=0. If A voted for B as 2nd place (2 points) the maximum of bonus points given to B would be 3-2=1 and it would remain in 2nd place. Equally, if the author of B would have voted for C as 2nd, C would only be able to get 1 bonus point as the difference of their votes.

Yes, it is a little complicated, and there are some special cases when the system might have limitations, but it is the most fair system we could think of. Let us know if you have some suggestion to improve it!

Thank you for participating in the survey, and for understanding, if the implemented changes are not to your liking. We hope that we can keep the creative and friendly spirit of Teitho!

Your Teitho-moderators,
Mirach, Carawyn, Karri, Sian22 and Lotrfan
